Jack R. and Marjorie J. Fraenkel Scholarship

Jack R. Fraenkel ended his career at San Francisco State University in 2011, retiring as Professor of Interdisciplinary Studies in Education in the College of Education (COE).  Dr. Fraenkel received his Ph.D. from Stanford University in June of 1966 and became a member of the SF State faculty the following fall, with a joint appointment in social science and education.  An alumnus of SF State, he received a Secondary Teaching Credential in 1959 and an M.A. in Interdisciplinary Social Science in 1965.

A nationally known scholar in social studies education, he received the James Michener Award in 1997 for his writings on the social studies and social sciences.  He was the author of numerous texts and articles on a variety of educational subjects, and the 8th edition of his text on educational research How to Design and Evaluate Research in Education, (co-authored with Professor Norman E. Wallen), was published by McGraw-Hill in 2011.  He received the outstanding research award from the National Council of the Social Studies, along with Wallen, in 1989.

While at SF State, Dr. Fraenkel was the Director of the R&D Center in the College of Education, started the COE Alumni Association, and edited the COE College of Education journal. For thirty years, he taught courses in educational research and statistics.

Application Criteria:

  1. Annual Award — Decision made during the fall semester for a spring award or during the spring semester for a fall award.
  2. Undergraduate student in one of the social sciences, mathematics or science.
  3. Planning to pursue a career in teaching mathematics, science, or one of the social sciences.

Other

All scholarships awarded shall be for one (1) year, but may be renewed for an additional year upon meeting the listed criteria and eligibility.

Eligibility:

  1. Student must show financial need as determined by the FAFSA or California Dream Application.
  2. Student must have a GPA of 3.5 or higher.
  3. Student's short and long term career goals in teaching and/or education.
  4. Student must demonstrate participation in at least one or more non-academic campus activities, such as sports, politics, or some type of community involvement.
  5. A personal statement that addresses:
    • Your academic background and achievements
    • Your short- and long-term plans to prepare yourself for a career in teaching
    • The non-academic activities you are involved in at SF State (sports, clubs, student groups, student government, etc), why you are involved in these activities and your role in the activity.
    • The community activities you are involved in outside of SF State, why you are involved in these activities and your role in the activity.
    • Your paid and volunteer work experience
    • Your financial need
    • Any adversity that you’ve overcome in pursuing your education
